The Lighthouse
The letter arrived on a Tuesday. Elena Carter stared at the envelope on her kitchen counter, her fingers trembling as she traced the edges of the faded paper. It was addressed to her in handwriting she hadn’t seen in five years, bold, slanted, and unmistakably his. Liam Blackwood. Her heart thudded in her chest as she turned the envelope over. No return address. No stamp. Just her name scrawled across the front in black ink. Whoever had delivered it had done so by hand, slipping it onto her porch like a ghost in the night. She shouldn’t open it. She knew that. Five years had passed since Liam had vanished from her life, leaving behind nothing but a cryptic note and a gaping hole in her heart. She’d spent those years building walls, burying memories, and convincing herself she was better off without him. But now, here it was, a piece of him, reaching out from the past, demanding her attention. With a shaky breath, she tore the envelope open. Inside was a single sheet of paper, the words scrawled in the same bold handwriting: "Meet me at the lighthouse. Midnight. Come alone." Elena’s stomach twisted. The lighthouse. Crimson Cove’s abandoned sentinel, perched on the edge of the cliffs where the ocean met the sky. It was a place she hadn’t dared to visit since that summer - the summer she’d spent with Liam, the summer that had ended in fire and heartbreak. She glanced at the clock. 10:47 PM. If she left now, she’d make it by midnight. “This is insane,” she muttered to herself, pacing the length of her small kitchen. “He’s probably not even there. This is some sick joke. Or a trap. Or .....” Or it was real. The thought stopped her in her tracks. What if it was real? What if Liam was really there, waiting for her after all these years? What if he had answers? What if he needed her? Her mind raced, torn between logic and the pull of something deeper, something she couldn’t quite name. Curiosity? Hope? Desire? Before she could talk herself out of it, she grabbed her coat and keys and headed for the door. --- The drive to Crimson Cove was a blur of winding roads and shadowed trees, the moon casting an eerie glow over the landscape. Elena’s hands gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles white as she tried to steady her breathing. She told herself she was being reckless, that this was a mistake, but her body seemed to move on its own, drawn by some invisible force. When she reached the cove, she parked her car at the edge of the cliffs and stepped out into the cool night air. The sound of the waves crashing against the rocks below filled her ears, a rhythmic pulse that matched the pounding of her heart. The lighthouse loomed ahead, its white paint chipped and weathered, its beam long since extinguished. It stood like a sentinel, silent and foreboding, against the dark sky. Elena hesitated, her feet rooted to the ground. This was it. The point of no return. “Get it together, Carter,” she whispered, forcing herself to move forward. “You’re a journalist. You’ve faced worse than this.” But as she approached the lighthouse, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was walking into something far bigger than she could handle. The door creaked open as she pushed it, the sound echoing through the empty structure. Inside, the air was thick with dust and the scent of saltwater. The spiral staircase stretched upward, disappearing into darkness. “Liam?” she called, her voice trembling. No answer. She climbed the stairs, each step echoing in the silence. Her pulse quickened with every passing moment, her mind racing with possibilities. What if he wasn’t here? What if this was all some cruel joke? What if— She reached the top of the staircase and froze. There he was. Liam Blackwood stood by the window, his silhouette framed by the moonlight. He was taller than she remembered, his shoulders broader, his presence more commanding. But it was him. There was no mistaking the sharp angles of his face, the intensity in his dark eyes, the way he held himself, like a predator waiting to strike. “You came,” he said, his voice low and rough, sending a shiver down her spine. Elena’s breath caught in her throat. Five years. Five years of wondering, of hurting, of trying to forget. And now, here he was, standing in front of her like no time had passed at all. “You left me,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Liam’s jaw tightened, his eyes flickering with something she couldn’t quite place. Regret? Pain? “I didn’t have a choice.” “Bullshit,” she snapped, her anger flaring. You don’t get to disappear for five years and then show up like nothing happened. You don’t get to—” “Elena.” His voice cut through hers, sharp and commanding. “I need your help.” She stared at him, her chest heaving. “My help? You’ve got to be kidding me.” “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t important,” he said, stepping closer. There are things you don’t know. Things I couldn’t tell you before. But now… now it’s different.” Elena’s mind raced. She wanted to walk away, to tell him to go to hell, but something in his eyes stopped her. Something desperate. Something real. “What kind of things?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper. Liam hesitated, his gaze locking onto hers. “The kind of things that could get us both killed.”
